A few weeks back a friend passed a casual remark, “People who are high on social media often struggle to make conversations with real people?” It sounded awkward but with the amount of digital indulgence we suffer most of us have become more at ease with words than voice; emails to calls. Social media animals or in some sense addicted to it.
From falling in love with someone through chat to picking up psychotic fights on the looniest of topics; From vigorously swiping the screen left to right looking for a connect in tinder to shaking the phone violently hoping Marisa Tomei shows up on WeChat; Can this digital transformation, in our personal & private lives, go without side effects?
Looking up online for signs of social media addiction, we all certainly need some de-addiction from social media. While I wish you all a happy 2014, I hope we get a less social – digitally and start talking to people in real life more; maybe get a little more cautious about our digital footprint too. In this digital era, the words were spoken can be taken back once spoken but what is shared online cannot be.
As we begin 2014, let’s pick up the phone and wish people on their birthdays; Let’s talk more than email; Let’s be careful before we share something online. You don’t want the ghosts of your past to haunt you when you make it big one day!
Here’s wishing you all a more ‘personal’ 2014!
