Last evening an old industry peer called me. He said, “Hey I keep reading all your posts on Facebook”. Suddenly there was an awkward silence, he obviously wasn’t amused with some of them. I wanted to avoid a debate. I took the safest way out; I giggled and gracefully changed the subject to cricket.
What if you googled your name right now? Beyond the momentary glee, vanity & vainglory, lies a risk; the risk of being suddenly nude in front of a billion people. If google ever published a report on how often were you searched online, we’ll be shocked one way or the other. Maybe a potential employer before an interview; your boss, before an annual review; a stalker who likes you, or your kid and her best friend too! Let’s make it worse, your wife! The possibilities are chilling.
It is downright deplorable if one doesn’t take a stand or have an opinion on what is happening around us. At the same time, your strong opinions may just be detrimental to your reputation & relationships that mater. Is being diplomatic the only way out? Injurious to the ego may be, it seems like the sanest way to keep your digital foot print controversy free. Just remember this next time you write /post/ blog about something sensitive. Like all free advice, it’s easier than practised; my blog is a living proof!
