Is Women Safety Is A Myth? Plea To All My Women Friends.
This happened sometime in November 2014; my wife & I were out for a run. We had just crossed TCS (Siruseri) when a taxi stuffed with probably 7 guys slowed down next to her; I had my iPods on, it took me a moment to become conscious of what was happening. I rushed closer with aggression trying to click a photo of the scoundrels; sensing troubling they stepped on the gas. It was a warning! Forget the midnight, even an early morning isn’t safe for a woman on a lonely road. Some find it strange when I say it, but since then we’ve never ventured for an early morning run outside the gates of our community.
A decomposed body of a 24-year-old girl was found a few days back, not too far from the spot those rogues slowed down on us. It was 7 against 2; we were an easy prey on a deserted road. Thinking of it gives me the shivers. The blame game has begun now, heads have started to a role; a cop has been suspended as if that stops the crime. The same old question will now be asked but in a different language, are women safe? We all thought Chennai was safe!
If you are a woman or someone who loves a woman dear, I just have one plea to make. Being paranoid is better than being penitent. The fear of the ‘dark’ is a natural human sense to keep you safe out of trouble. Safety & women’s liberation don’t mean the same. Screw feminism, to someone you mean the world, so you better be safe. Stay safe. Stay sensible.
vimal, this is exactly what i used to tell u when a discussion on safety of women in delhi and gurgaon used to come up…..i firmly beleive that no place is safe….we have to take care….cheers
